How Often Should You Professionally Clean Your Carpet?

Homes with children and pets require more frequent professional carpet cleaning.

One of the most common questions homeowners ask is about carpet cleaning frequency — how often should carpets be professionally cleaned?

The honest answer is that every situation is different.

I have clients who schedule carpet and upholstery cleaning every three months, and I also meet homeowners who haven’t had their carpets cleaned in 10 or even 15 years. Neither situation is unusual, which is why there is no single answer that fits everyone.

The right cleaning frequency depends on several factors, including the number of people living in the home, whether you have children or pets, the amount of foot traffic, allergies, and how much time is spent indoors.

For example, if you have two dogs, three children, and a busy household, your carpet is collecting soil, pet dander, allergens, food particles, and oils every single day. In that case, cleaning every 3–6 months can make a noticeable difference in both appearance and indoor air quality.

On the other hand, a single person living alone with no pets may be able to go much longer between professional cleanings.

One thing that many people don’t realize is that modern residential carpet is not designed to last forever. In many homes, the average carpet has an expected lifespan of approximately 5–7 years, even when it is properly maintained.

Professional carpet cleaning cannot stop normal wear and tear, but it can significantly slow down the aging process. Dirt and abrasive particles work their way deep into the carpet fibers and act like sandpaper every time someone walks across the surface. Over time, this causes the fibers to wear down, lose their texture, and flatten permanently.

The less frequently a carpet is cleaned, the lower the expectations should be for restoration. Deeply embedded soil, long-term staining, and years of accumulated contamination can become much more difficult or sometimes impossible to fully remove.

This is why regular maintenance is so important.

In my experience, having your carpet professionally cleaned every 3–12 months is one of the best ways to extend its life, maintain a cleaner home environment, reduce allergens, and keep the carpet looking its best for as long as possible.

Regular cleaning is usually easier, more effective, and less expensive than waiting until the carpet becomes heavily soiled.

A well-maintained carpet not only looks better it often lasts longer, smells fresher, and contributes to a healthier home overall.
